Etiquette at the table

The Committee of the Wellington Bridge Club Inc. is committed to ensuring acceptable player behaviour at all times. There should always be a pleasant atmosphere in the Club, thus making the game of bridge more enjoyable for all.
In accordance with the Laws of Duplicate Bridge (2017), particularly Law 74, Conduct and Etiquette, the following outlines what is expected of all players on Club playing nights and at tournaments sponsored by the Club, as well as on the premises before and after each session.
Etiquette includes  punctuality and consideration for others’ time.
Please arrive and be seated at least 10 minutes before the game so the start is not delayed, keep to the time allocated for each set of boards, so the finish is not delayed, and give early notice to your partner and the club manager if you are delayed or cannot play.
Positive Behaviour at the table, for example:
  • Being a good ‘host’ or ‘guest’ at the table
  • Greeting others in a friendly manner
  • Praising the bidding and/or play of the opponents
  • Having a clearly completed system card readily available to the opponents.
The following are some examples of behaviour which will not be tolerated:
  • Rudeness, intimidation, or violence
  • Negative comments concerning opponents’ or partner’s play or bidding and/or constant analysis at the table
  • Arguing with the Director’s ruling
  • Racist or sexist behaviour or comments or jokes
